## Overview

A lot of business data still moves as files: nightly ERP exports, partner price lists, bank statements, payroll files. The FTP Client lists, uploads, downloads, moves and deletes files on FTP and SFTP servers, so a file that lands on a server can start a workflow, and a workflow can drop its output where a partner expects it. On SFTP it can also check whether a file exists and upload several files at once, and you can sign in with an SSH key instead of a password.

## Use cases

### Pick up partner files on a schedule

Check a partner's SFTP folder on a schedule, download new files and pass their contents to the next step: orders into your ERP, a price list into your product catalog. Move each file to an archive folder once it's processed, so nothing is loaded twice.

- No manual downloads
- Processed files archived automatically
- Works with any SFTP partner

### Deliver reports and exports

Build a report or export in a workflow, then upload it to the folder a bank, payroll provider or customer reads from. On SFTP, one step can upload several files.

- Scheduled delivery without scripts
- Several files in one step
- One workflow builds and sends

### Check a file arrived before acting

Use SFTP check file exists, with a full or partial file name, to confirm an expected file is there before a downstream job runs, and alert the team if it isn't.

- Catch missing files early
- Match on partial names
- Alert the right team

## Challenges Tray.ai solves

### Keeping server credentials out of workflows

File servers often share one login across scripts, and the password ends up in config files.

**How Tray.ai helps:** The FTP Client keeps the host, port, username and password, or a private SSH key, in a Tray authentication that workflows reference without exposing it. Tray recommends SFTP with SSH keys as the more secure setup.

### Vague errors from strict servers

Some servers refuse file names they don't allow and return only "Access Denied", with no other detail.

**How Tray.ai helps:** Check the server's file naming rules when an upload is refused, and use workflow error handling to send a failed upload to someone who can fix it.
