# JSONata inline functions

**You can now run a JSONata query directly in a step input field, without adding a JSON Transformer step.**

Advanced data shaping used to mean breaking out of the step you were building: add a JSON Transformer, wire it up, then map its output back in. JSONata inline functions collapse all of that into the field itself.

* **Reshape data in place** - restructure objects, filter and group arrays, and run calculations across a payload without leaving the properties panel.
* **Fewer steps, fewer tasks** - one field does the work of a whole transformation step, so workflows stay smaller and cost less to run.
* **Satisfy more input schemas** - a JSONata function can return an array or an object, not just the string, number and boolean values that inline functions are limited to.

Select `jsonata` from the input type drop-down on any field that supports inline functions:
