What is intelligent document processing?
Intelligent document processing (IDP) uses AI — typically a combination of OCR, NLP, and large language models — to read unstructured documents and extract structured data from them. An invoice comes in as a PDF; IDP pulls out the vendor, line items, amounts, and due dates as clean fields that can route into NetSuite or SAP automatically.
The “intelligent” part is what separates IDP from older OCR and template-matching approaches. Traditional document processing required rigid templates: if the invoice layout changed, the extraction broke. IDP understands documents semantically — it can handle layout variation, handwriting, multiple languages, and novel document types without being reprogrammed.
Why it matters
Documents are everywhere in enterprise operations, and manual data entry is one of the most persistent sources of cost and error. Accounts payable teams processing thousands of invoices a month, legal teams reviewing contract terms, HR teams handling onboarding forms — in each case, a person is reading a document and typing values into a system that could receive them automatically.
IDP eliminates that loop. The document arrives, structured data is extracted, validation rules fire, exceptions are flagged for human review, and clean data pushes into the downstream system. The people who were doing data entry shift to handling exceptions — the work that actually requires judgment.
The confidence scoring piece is critical. IDP extracts data with a confidence level per field. High-confidence fields route automatically; low-confidence ones go to a human reviewer. That’s human-in-the-loop applied to document processing — automation for the routine, human review for the uncertain.
