AI agent

An AI system that can reason about a task, use tools to act on it, and learn from feedback — not just generate text.

What an AI agent actually is

An AI agent goes beyond chat. A chatbot retrieves information and responds in text. An agent does things: unlocks a user account, provisions software, pulls data from Snowflake, updates a ticket in ServiceNow, books a meeting, escalates when policy requires a human.

To do those things, an agent needs four parts:

  1. A reasoning engine — usually an LLM, sometimes with custom logic wrapped around it — that decides what to do next given the current task.
  2. Tools — concrete actions the agent can take. Send a Slack message. Query a database. Create a Salesforce opportunity.
  3. Knowledge — context the agent can consult. Documentation, past tickets, structured data, vector-indexed content.
  4. Guardrails — policies, approvals, rate limits, audit trails. The parts that make an agent safe to run in production.

Why it matters to Tray.ai

Most AI products sold as “agents” are really chatbots with better UI. They answer questions but don’t take real action in real systems. That’s a big deal — the value of an agent increases dramatically when it can act, not just advise.

Tray.ai’s Merlin Agent Builder is designed around the action pattern. Merlin agents connect directly to the 700+ connectors in Tray.ai’s integration library as tools, so an IT agent can actually reset a password, a customer support agent can actually refund an order, a revenue ops agent can actually update a Salesforce opportunity.

Agent Gateway provides the governed MCP layer that makes those agent actions safe at enterprise scale — RBAC, audit trails, rate limits, approval flows.

The distinction that matters

A chatbot answers. An agent acts. When someone says “AI agent,” ask: what does it actually do in your systems? If the answer is “surface information from a knowledge base,” it’s a retrieval chatbot, not an agent.

Agents in production

Apollo’s IT Agent, built on Merlin, handles real IT tickets — unlocking accounts, provisioning software, closing tickets — and was the #1 ticket resolver in its operation its first month. That gap between “a bot that describes how to reset a password” and “an agent that resets the password, with audit trail” is where business value lives.
