Hyperautomation

A Gartner-coined term for the disciplined, enterprise-wide application of automation — combining AI, integration, and process tools to automate everything that can be automated.

What is hyperautomation?

Hyperautomation is a term Gartner introduced to describe the next stage of enterprise automation: not automating individual processes in isolation, but systematically identifying and automating everything that can be automated, across the entire organization.

The word “hyper” reflects scope and ambition more than a specific technology. Hyperautomation programs typically combine several tools: iPaaS for integration, process automation for workflows, RPA for UI-based tasks that lack APIs, AI for decision-making, and analytics to identify what to automate next.

Gartner has included hyperautomation in its top strategic technology trends for several consecutive years, which is part of why the term circulates widely in analyst reports and vendor conversations.

Why it matters

The business case for hyperautomation is compounding returns. Each automated process reduces operational cost and frees people for higher-value work. Do it across the organization — not just IT’s backlog — and the effect multiplies.

The organizational challenge is the harder part. Hyperautomation requires visibility into what processes exist, which ones are worth automating, and a platform that can actually execute across all of them. Most companies have fragmented automation stacks — RPA here, a Zapier account there, some custom scripts, a legacy middleware. Hyperautomation requires consolidating that onto platforms with real governance.

The AI inflection point is making this more achievable. Agentic AI systems can now handle exception handling, unstructured data, and multi-step decisions that previously required human intervention or custom code. The ceiling on what’s automatable is rising fast.

Hyperautomation at Tray.ai

Tray.ai is built for the hyperautomation ambition: one platform for process automation, data integration, API management, connectivity, IDP, and AI agents — all governed together. Not a collection of point tools stitched with middleware. One platform, one governance model, one connector library.
