- The controls a review asks for. Free excludes projects, SSO, log streaming, external secrets, environments and Git version control, with audit logging Enterprise only. Set that beside a security questionnaire and the overlap is close to total.
- A meter on your own servers. €667 a month, billed annually for 40,000 executions, then €4,000 per additional bucket of 300,000 executions. You pay per execution on a plan whose whole premise is that the infrastructure is yours.

Is self-hosted n8n really free? +
Free Community self-hosted is genuinely unmetered. Unlimited executions, no meter, no phone-home. That is a genuine and unusual offer, and it should be said plainly before anything else. What sits outside it is the set of controls on a paid tier, and the infrastructure you run underneath.
What is not included in the free community edition? +
Per n8n's own community edition features documentation: Projects, SSO, Log streaming, External secrets, Environments, Git version control, Sharing. Most of that list is exactly what a security or compliance review asks for, which is why the free edition tends to stop being viable at the point the platform becomes worth reviewing.
What does the paid self-hosted tier cost? +
n8n publishes its prices, so these are quotable rather than estimated. As retrieved on 18 August 2026: €667 a month, billed annually for 40,000 executions on the plan n8n labels "Self-hosted", then €4,000 per additional bucket of 300,000 executions. Prices change, so check their page.
Does the self-hosted licence phone home? +
The licence key must ping n8n daily to stay active, reporting production execution counts. Worth knowing before an air-gapped or restricted-network deployment is designed around it, since it is a live outbound dependency rather than a one-time activation.
What infrastructure does a production n8n deployment need? +
In n8n's own documented architecture: Redis, Postgres, Worker containers, Webhook containers, Multi-main high availability, gated above the free tier. Each of those is something to provision, monitor, back up, patch and be on call for, and none of it appears on any invoice.
