A security researcher submits a report through the bug bounty platform on a Monday. It describes a way to read other customers’ invoices by changing a number in a URL. The security team confirms it on Wednesday, then spends two weeks finding out which engineering team owns the billing service.
The researcher hears nothing in that time. In the third week, they post a redacted write-up publicly, and the company learns its response time from social media.
Bug bounty report triage is the part of security operations that handles findings from outside the company. The researchers who send them are watching the clock too.
What is bug bounty triage?
Bug bounty triage checks each report from an outside researcher for duplicates and validity, sizes it, and routes it to the team that owns the affected system. It also keeps the researcher informed at each step, within the response times the program promises.
Why reports wait
- Duplicates are checked by hand. Analysts search past reports to see whether the issue is already known.
- Ownership takes days to find. The report names a URL or a feature, and nobody knows which team owns it.
- The fix lives in another tracker. The report stays in the bounty platform, engineering works in Jira or GitHub, and the two don’t sync.
- Researchers don’t hear back. Status changes in engineering never reach the platform.
- Payouts wait on someone checking the fix. The bounty can’t be paid until someone confirms the fix shipped.
What it costs
Slow responses push researchers to publish or to stop reporting. Valid issues stay open longer than they need to. The program’s reputation decides which researchers bother to report, and it slips with every missed response time.
What to fix first
- Check new reports against past ones automatically. An AI agent compares each report with past ones and flags likely duplicates for an analyst to confirm.
- Map features and URLs to owners. Keep the mapping in one place, so routing takes minutes.
- Create the ticket in the owner’s tracker. Link it to the report, with the severity and the researcher’s steps attached.
- Sync status back to the platform. The researcher sees each change without anyone copying it across.
- Draft replies for review. An agent drafts each update to the researcher, and an analyst sends it.

Where it fits
Bug reports take the same route to engineering as scanner findings in vulnerability prioritization, and the two can share the owner mapping. A report showing that customer data was exposed becomes an incident, which follows incident management.
